coordination studies
We develop settings for protective relays and reclosers for power substations, transmission lines, generation and electric distribution facilities. We ensure coordination of protective devices and compliance with NERC standards. We produce the electronic setting files to be uploaded into the microprocessor relays as well as a fault current model of your system including the protective devices. Licensed to provide Professional Engineering services in the State of Florida and able to obtain license quickly in any State.
We will follow your existing protection philosophy or develop protection criteria for your application following best industry practice.
Communication, collaboration, flexibility and attention to detail are the keys to our success. We will get the job right the first time.
Jim is a highly experienced engineer specializing in relay settings and protection & control design. With over 30 years of experience with two major US utilities and a large consulting firm, Jim has successfully led a variety of projects, ranging from 500 kV to 480 Volts.
Jim has prepared relay settings for transmission lines, buses, transformers, capacitor banks, large generators, distribution feeders, reclosers, and solar plant interconnections. He developed protection philosophies and settings logic for system standards and specialized applications. Jim has led NERC PRC standards compliance initiatives, produced settings for distribution automation schemes and performed arc flash studies. Jim has experience leading large commercial and industrial customer projects and enjoys a challenge.
Jim graduated from Duke University in 1984 with a BS in Engineering and holds a professional electrical engineering license in the state of Florida [License # 69718]
Prepared relay settings for a 230/115 kV substation including eight transmission lines, two 230/115 kV auto-transformers, four 230 kV capacitor banks, and 18 breaker control/ breaker failure relays. Developed a standard for the client’s first grounded capacitor installation, including a control scheme to rotate operation between the capacitor banks.
Prepared relay settings for a 26/13 kV substation with two 20 MVA transformers to supply an industrial customer. Prepared settings for SEL-487E transformer differential relays including restricted earth fault, backup overcurrent, breaker failure, reverse power and feeder protection.
Prepared settings for relay upgrades to an existing 500 kV and 230 kV generating station, including transmission switchyard and generator relays. Settings included SEL-300G and Beckwith synchronizing relays.
Prepared relay settings for a 115 kV switchyard connecting 75 MW of solar generation into the grid. Developed line differential protection settings. Coordinated UV/OV, UF/OF protection with inverter protection and NERC PRC-024 ride through requirements.
Prepared settings for 50 relays for a new substation to supply power to an industrial customer. One 230 kV line applied DCB line protection, and one applied line current differential protection. Developed settings for auto-transformers, bus differential relays, breaker control and breaker failure relays, and 69 kV step distance line relays. Coordinated settings with customer protection.
Prepared settings files for approximately one hundred 12.5 kV S&C IntelliRupter reclosers. Prepared fault study model and performed coordination study with all feeder relays and fuses.
